Maria Ruiz branding the Salt Girl into tortillas at Morning Glory Cafe 1990

Maria Ruiz

Morning Glory Cafe was established in 1985 by Maria Ruiz. A local icon, Maria was known for her healing food, wisdom and humor. She nourished the community through her passion for organic whole foods cuisine. She believed that food is medicine and remained devoted to using simple, quality, whole food ingredients and creating healthy versions of family recipes from New Mexico like blue corn tamales and red chile. She was also a visionary who recognized hemp seed as a superfood early on, inventing Morning Glory’s Hemp Burger in 1990. The cozy kitchen made you feel at home and each plate was served with an extra side of wit and compassion. The ripples of her Love still spread throughout the Universe and her Legacy of Conscious Cooking continues here today. We are honored to carry on her passion for preparing nourishing whole foods while creating positive group dynamics and creating as little waste as possible. Thank you for supporting local, sustainable, small business and our legacy of love here at Morning Glory Cafe. As Maria would say….. Peace, Love and Ten Thousand times Ten Thousand Blessings.

I had the honor of working for Maria at Morning Glory Cafe for over fifteen years. Her family entrusted me with her legacy here when she died in September of 2009. I am honored to carry on Morning Glory’s tradition of providing delicious and nourishing food made from the highest quality ingredients using sustainable business practices in a safe and inclusive space.

Through our commitment to being 100% plant based we greatly reduce our carbon footprint. By shopping local, recycling and composting we produce less than a single household’s worth of trash each week. We cook in small batches to maintain high quality and reduce food waste. We compost all of our food scraps and use the compost to fertilize our seasonal on-site organic garden. We also partner with local organic growers in the community. We collect our greywater and use it to water our landscaping.

We are honored to serve this community and no one is turned away for lack of funds. Inquire about our Mitzvah Board to learn how you can support our Paid Forward food outreach program. We are in the process of creating an urban green space and community garden behind the cafe and are accepting donations to our go fund me The Maria Ruiz and Sean Thomann Memorial Garden Fund…..
